In the mid-1990s, I was traumatized by a violent crime that shook my entire view of the world. Up until that experience, I viewed life from inside a bubble of safety, dishing out trust to almost everyone I met, believing that bad things happen to other people. I was a socialite, afraid I might miss something if I stayed home. I enjoyed being around people and flitted through life with a naivety that made me almost fearless.
