Necessary for survival: Food/clothing/shelter/balance.
Necessary for happiness: Food/clothing/shelter/balance.
Picture your brain as a line. Is the line all tangled and squiggly like knotted yarn or does it just go smoothly up and down in balance? No knots.
Now ask yourself, are you working at having a tangled mess? Or are you working at keeping things even and pleasant? Are you working at it? Or is it just happening without your help? (Clue: you are always helping). If your line is tangled and you are having trouble getting it untangled, you get frustrated, and that causes more tangles. You will never fix it that way. Learning to say "oh well" and really mean it is the cure.
If you cannot be happy, you are malfunctioning. Malfunctioning is making demands (things have to be this way or that way), assuming (of course things will be the way I want them to be and if they aren't it's a crisis), feeling entitled (I deserve to have everything the way I want it and cannot stand otherwise), and spoiled (If I do not get my way I must control everyone and everything around me, and if I cannot do that I will go off in anger or die).
Malfunctioning like that is a real waste of the blessing of existence. Seek balance, always. Learn from other people's mistakes so you do not have to make them yourself. We have everything we need to be. All that tangled knotted mess is a trap. Don't fall for it.
