I remember the first time I encountered the concept of a Writers’ Group. I was in my early 30’s, and had spent my life thus far around words, writing, and reading, but had never heard of a Writers’ Group. “What a novel thing!” I thought, not knowing such groups were common throughout the world.
At that time, now more than two decades ago, the Calhoun-Gilmer Writer’s Group met at different member’s homes once a month and held an annual retreat. For the most part, I was the youngest consistent attendee of the meetings. And, like many local groups and organizations, participants aged out, moved out, or were otherwise put out, and the group eventually fizzled out.
For a brief year before Covid, another group launched in Gilmer, and then, well, the pandemic.
So, what is a Writers’ Group? Simply put, a writing group is a gathering of people who enjoy writing and meet up regularly.
